Dental X-ray it is the most important investigation, in addition to the anamnesis and the objective examination, which are mandatory for everything dental treatment, namely it shows the state of all the tissues in the oral cavity, both the visible ones (the teeth) and the formations hidden from the human eye (jaws, bones, sinuses, soft tissues).

Types of dental x-rays, indications
After placing the device in relation to the oral cavity, we distinguish between intraoral and extraoral dental radiographs. In turn, intraoral dental x-rays can be of several types, depending on the area they target:
- Periapical retroalveolar dental radiograph - highlights dental problems such as: abscesses, incorrectly performed root canal treatments, gingival or periodontal diseases, determines bone density;
- Dental X-ray bitewing (with bitten film) – detects hard-to-see caries, enamel cracks;
- Dental occlusal radiograph (maxillary or mandibular) - allows the detection of cysts, mandibular fissures, abscesses, teeth that have not yet erupted or are growing incorrectly.
The main types of extraoral dental x-rays, depending on the targeted area, are:
- Panoramic dental x-ray or dental orthopantomography - highlights all the teeth, as well as the jaws and sinuses, they are useful practically any time, but especially indicated when several areas are targeted or an ensemble vision is needed;
- The telegraphs (front, profile and axial) – shows the image of the entire skull, in various positions, to observe the teeth in relation to the jaw and the profile of the patient, often useful for the orthodontist or the surgeon who will insert a dental implant.
Digital radiography - advantages
Digital dental radiography it is distinguished by a clearly superior quality to the classic one, with minimal radiation. The information obtained can be sent directly to the doctor by e-mail, stored in electronic format and accessed at any time, later, without getting lost.
