If your smile does not look as you would like and requires rehabilitation, but certain teeth have endured countless dental treatments: root canal treatments (popularly known as "tooth without a nerve"), massive fillings, or have cavities or fractures, the best way to enjoy healthy and aesthetic teeth, is the treatment with dental crowns.

At DAVINCI dental clinic, dental crowns are made using digital technologies, from high-quality materials that ensure both resistance and a natural appearance, 100% the same as your teeth.

What are dental crowns?

A dental crown is a prosthetic work that covers and provides functionality and aesthetics to a tooth with a high degree of destruction or that has undergone dental treatment. Thus, the dental crown will increase the strength of the tooth and protect it from other dental conditions.

Important! A dental crown is used to completely cover or "wrap" a damaged tooth. This looks like a tooth, with the note that it fits like a cap over the affected tooth. A dental crown improves the appearance, shape and alignment of the teeth. A crown can also be placed over an implant to provide a natural tooth-like shape and structure. (See Dental Implant Prosthetics)

When is a dental crown needed?

Dental crowns are recommended in the following situations:

  • over 50% destroyed teeth due to deep caries – dental crowns acting as a 3D protective casing
  • teeth that need restoration in terms of shape or color
  • devitalized teeth (nerveless) and with massive fillings
  • Discolored or discolored teeth that do not undergo teeth whitening
  • devitalized teeth, colored pink or gray, which do not undergo endodontic whitening, (see endodontic whitening)
  • within the prosthesis on the dental implant

What materials are dental crowns made of?

Dental crowns can be made of several materials, using various techniques in the dental laboratory, and their durability depends on their quality. The most durable dental crowns in modern dentistry are zirconium dental crowns or EMAX all-ceramic dental crowns.

Below are the types of dental crowns according to the material:

  • composite dental crown (acrylate)

they are temporary (provisional) dental crowns, which are sometimes indispensable in the successful treatment of teeth with a very high degree of destruction. Composite is a less durable and cheap material. Acrylate crowns have a short lifespan, in the environment being recommended for 6-12 months.

  • metal-ceramic dental crown

it is a ceramic crown with a simple (non-noble) metal frame. It is the cheapest ceramic crown, but it presents certain disadvantages over time, compared to other ceramic crowns. See details (Where does the price difference between the different types of dental crowns come from?) or

Make an appointment with the dentist. At DAVINCI dental clinic, you get accurate and comprehensive information during the consultation with the specialist in dental aesthetics and prosthetics. Don't hesitate anymore

The skeleton of this work is made of non-noble metal alloys such as chrome-nickel (Cr/Ni), chrome-cobalt (Cr/Co), much more affordable (but lower in quality) compared to noble alloys (gold, palladium) or zirconium .

It can be indicated in most cases both for front and back teeth or to cover dental implants. It is inferior to crowns with a zirconium skeleton or gold alloy, but it is clearly superior to metal acrylic or metal composite crowns.

  • ceramic dental crown (porcelain)

It is made entirely of ceramic, without a metal or zirconium skeleton. It is used in the front areas of the oral cavity (incisors in particular), where the aesthetic demands are maximum.

It requires a complicated processing technology, requiring special, extremely expensive ceramics. It is, along with the crown with zirconium skeleton, the most expensive dental crown. The aesthetic results are excellent. And in time it justifies its price.

  • zirconium dental crown

it integrates perfectly with natural teeth, so it meets even the most demanding requirements in terms of aesthetics. Zirconium is a biocompatible, analergic material with great resistance and aesthetics. The cost of this material is extremely high, as well as the systems required for its processing. The price of such works is high, but the resistance and aesthetics of these crowns are excellent because the final restoration will not contain any metal.

Remember: At DAVNCI dental clinic, all-ceramic or Zirconium dental crowns are made of quality materials, such as all-porcelain (E-max, lithium-disilicate or feldspar) or zirconium, using the highest precision CAD-CAM (Computer Assisted Design – Computer Assisted Manufacture). Because we want our patients to benefit from complex but fast, aesthetic and functional treatment solutions, we have implemented the concept of fully digitized Dentistry. Thus, our patients can enjoy prosthetic works with a special aesthetic and micron precision, the dental crowns adapting perfectly to the treated tooth and integrating 100% with the rest of the dentition.

What is the procedure for placing a dental crown?

The process of placing a dental crown involves two major stages that we present to you below:

First visit involves examining the patient and establishing the treatment plan. Before starting this process, our doctors will give you a consultation to find out if this type of restoration suits you. Once we have determined the best treatment option, we move on to preparing the teeth.

During the first visit, digital fingerprinting also takes place (quick and comfortable). After the tooth has been prepared, the doctor takes a 3D optical impression, using the intraoral scanner. The impression is sent to the laboratory, and the patient goes home with a temporary dental crown that protects the tooth.

The second visit takes place as soon as the dental crown is ready. The temporary crown is replaced with the permanent one, and the patient enjoys a new, beautiful and functional smile. Accommodation with the new dental crown is done in a short time, and it then feels exactly like a natural tooth.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of dental crowns?

The advantages of dental crowns are numerous. In addition to functionality, dental crowns also have an aesthetic role, being often used to correct the shape of the teeth or their position (crooked teeth, interdental spaces).

Advantages of dental crowns

  • functional rehabilitation of the tooth - immediately after the application of the dental crown, the masticatory function is resumed
  • Fracture protection of the devitalized tooth or with massive fillings
  • Extending the life of the compromised tooth
  • Long term of operation
  • Fast dental restoration
  • Harmonization of the face - effect of rejuvenation by 8-10 years
  • Restores the destroyed tooth – dental crowns can rebuild the tooth even in cases where it is damaged in proportion to more than 50% (caries, fractures);
  • Special and natural aesthetic result – regardless of the chosen material, thanks to the realization of the design on the computer
  • Immediate accommodation

Disadvantages dental crowns

Disadvantages can only be found in the case of lower quality dental crowns such as metal or acrylic ones, their resistance being questionable. Also, metal-supported crowns do not provide a high aesthetic level, and patient accommodation can be more difficult.

Tip: Choose carefully and carefully the clinic where you will have the treatment and the dentist who will treat you. Dental treatments are a long-term investment. And sometimes cheap means expensive in the long run, especially when it comes to health.

How long do dental crowns last?

The lifespan of a dental crown depends on good oral care. It is important to carefully brush the teeth, twice a day, use dental floss and mouthwash. With proper hygiene, the lifespan of a ceramic crown can even exceed 15 years.

Does it hurt when you get a dental crown?

Fixing the dental crown is painless, so you have nothing to worry about. Depending on the case, the preparation of the affected tooth can be done with a simple local anesthesia, so that pain or any type of embarrassment is completely eliminated.

Dental crowns or veneers?

If you want to trust your smile again, both dental crowns and dental veneers are two treatment options with exceptional aesthetic results.

Dental veneers are the ideal solution for solving aesthetic problems, but which have a smaller scale: stained tooth, chipped tooth, minor cracks in the teeth, small spaces between the teeth. When the problems are of a more complicated nature and the teeth have essential defects: fractured tooth, tooth with a massive filling (with increased risk of fracture), tooth undergoing root canal treatment, a dental crown is needed to keep the tooth intact and protect it from any risks that could lead to extraction.

Schedule a consultation and together with the dentist discuss which is the most suitable treatment option for you.

Dental crown or implant?

A dental crown is fixed over an existing tooth, devitalized or with a high degree of destruction. A dental implant is necessary when there is one or more missing teeth. It is actually an artificial root made of titanium, which is inserted into the jaw bone. Afterwards, the dental crown is applied on a prefabricated prosthetic abutment (abutment) that is fixed in the implant.

Depending on the complexity of your clinical case and consulting with your doctor, you will choose one of the two options.

Will it be noticeable that I have dental crowns, how much will they look like my natural teeth?

No, the dental crown is not noticeable, especially those made of ceramic or zirconium, no one will even know of its existence (colleagues, friends). Even if you tell them, they wouldn't be able to guess it because they look just like your natural teeth. It perfectly imitates the enamel of the teeth, and the color is natural and chosen according to the shade of your teeth (including the degree of transparency can be adjusted). So even if it is a dental crown of a front tooth, you have nothing to worry about.

Remember Metal-ceramic crowns (which have a metal casing, covered with ceramic) have a disadvantage: over time, the gum around the crown sometimes acquires a violet hue, or the metal edge of the crown recedes and becomes a little more prominent. In the image below (left - metal-ceramic crowns, right - their replacement with all-ceramic crowns)

How do I brush my teeth if I have a dental crown?

Dental crowns will be cared for exactly like natural teeth. So you will only have to respect your oral hygiene – brushing twice a day, dental floss, mouthwash. The movements of the brush will be from the gum to the tooth, and the brushing will last 3-5 minutes.

You will also need to make sure you get to the dentist twice a year for routine check-ups.

How much does a dental crown cost?

The price of dental crowns differs depending on the technology and materials used, therefore a lower price will be for those composed of metal + ceramic (metal-ceramic), in contrast to the all-ceramic ones (without metal support – IPS e.max.) .

At DAVINCI dental clinic we offer you dental crowns at a very good quality-price ratio!
